Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing it!
Have you tried the clipping mask on photoshop? It's another way to put texture and other effects on your drawing.

I like :) Something else to learn and practice.

That's a great tip!
I sometimes do something similar, but I would usually put the alpha channel mask on a layer group folder.
That way you can build up your texture or shading over several layers within the group, but still keep the layers separate and editable, while getting the same effect.

awesome tutorial!
do you use a textured brush when making the mask outline in step 6?

Nice... love seeing other people's step by step process.

Thanks !

cool, but it seems like a very long and complicated process, for something that you can do with out using alpha channels at all.

you can simply create a base color layer, and then add as many clipping mask layers as you like, drawing on them the textures, lighting and shadows with out escaping the borders of the original shape of the case color.

great work

I'd be interested to hear more about clipping masks as some have pointed out in the comments.

Thanks for sharing Wouter. I've been using illustrator lately to create vector illustrations, but I'd like to add texture - a style I see in a lot in Children's illustration.

It helps to see how you go about your process. Can it be pretty time consuming for you?
