This was extremely helpful Brian. I always go straight to shape and have never tried just putting down a line. I tried this in my life drawing class and it made a HUGE difference. Extremely helpful.

oh good. Glad it was of use. I think i usually go shape or line.. but sometimes when i draw shape.. I still draw it in simple line.. one thing i forgot to write about was.. how you put down the lines... like whether you use a broken line.. a flowy line.. where do you break the line.. how far to you go with the line... but I think this is very personal.. one person may break a line in two.. while the other person does the same thing with one line.. it's extremely interesting to watch and see how other artists put down their lines literally.. sometime you see a shortcut because of the way they draw in those lines.

This was really helpful! I was trying to figure out a way to "quick sketch" on location this morning without getting bogged down with detail. Shape came into play but I never thought about it like this. I'm going to give it a try!
I love all the quick sketches on your blog btw!

Your insight is a wonderful complement to books such as Wayne Gilbert's 'Simplified Drawing for Planning Animation' and Walt Stanchfield's 'Drawn to Life' volumes. Simply put; Powerful stuff. (This whole site is great)
Thanks Brian!

This is a great tutorial. I tried your method yest, and I have difficulty putting down ONLY the lines. I almost want to connect the broken lines to create an appealing shape. How do you avoid doing that? I almost have consciously stop myself "connecting" the lines. Is this method simply to save time?

Hey Ivanator, I think you connect the lines eventually.. I just put them down in broken fashion because it feels like I can get stuff down faster by not worrying about how things connect to each other yet.. once I get that down I do connect them. Think.. "stickman".. just trying to put the simplest thing down.. that will indicate all the essential stuff.. for speed (useful if your subject is moving).. after you get the essential lines down.. you can pretty much make up the rest if you choose to.. or you can look at your subject for detail information.. the nice thing is you already have the pose.. so you don't need to worry about that any longer..

This is really good.
The page on hands will help me especially, I think.
They are really good 'notation' for hands for when you're in the early stages of a sketch.

Thanks
