I wanted to share some quick philosophies about drawing folds and creases on clothing. This is something that can be deceivingly simple. We know the concepts in our head but when we have to draw folds they end up looking awkward and misplaced. What I point out below is pretty obvious. The main things to consider are: 1.) Clothing/Drapery behavior is not random, and 2.) Observing is drawing. Look for clothing behavior in daily life and make mental notes, then sketch them until they look natural. Awesome stuff! Thanks so much for sharing. This is very helpful.
Louie,
Thanks for the post, this is very well-presented. I love this style of pictorial and I learned from this one.
As a well-intentioned discussion point: One set of lines makes me squirm a little - under "Knee and lower leg," where your label on the folds 'pulls away' from the creased pit of the knee. I would expect the fabric to pull away from the _tension point_, rather than radiate from the crease.
I prefer to think of the "slack side" of the fabric as sagging away from the crease, with the fold lines generally radiating from the point in tension.
Thanks! *goes back to staring at his Dockers*
Thank you everyone. I am glad this is helpful.
Johnnyburn,
You are correct. That arrow should be pointing the other way. (My error) The bottom of the pant pulls away from the knee to the hem. Consequently, another thing I forgot to point out is that, the pant fabric actually radiates out from the crotch in parallel lines and culminating at the knee bend. I'll see about posting an extra sketch for that...
Thanks for clarifying.
Just what I needed. Spectacular!
